    All B2B companies are in the race of finding the perfect marketing mix to support sales. Many marketing directors within the IT-industry say the same thing: ”Online marketing is too expensive, the ROI is way too low”. And they are right.

    One example is Rune Hodell, Marketing Director at CDC Software, Nordic region, who shares his experience on online marketing. ”Just as most B2B tech-companies, CDC Software is not interested in advertising online to all people, all companies. We are often interested in certain verticals and can´t afford broad online marketing, it´s too expensive.”

    Display advertising is stalling, wrote Adtomas Henry Lohk on dagensmedia.se last week. On the contrary, the threshold to exploiting display advertising is lower than ever, says Vendemore’s CEO Christopher Engman.

    Henry Lohks analysis of the relationship between display advertising and search advertising (”Entry level for display advertisers is too high,” dagensmedia.se 2011-10-12) is a little misleading. However, it is forgivable, since most of the banners that new customers recently placed in major consumer media simply cannot be seen by anyone other than exactly those individuals that they want to reach. Henrik Lohk probably doesn’t belong to this circle so he has never seen those ads.

    And that’s the point. You can now reach an extremely narrow and elusive target audience with display advertising and unlike paid search, you can make an impression on people who are not actively seeking the product or solution that you are promoting.

    From this year, and up to 2016, Forrester Research estimates that traffic to banners will increase by 20% per year in monetary terms, compared to search marketing which will only increase by 12%.

    “I think that the Forresters report on banner ads shows that the future is bright, but that banners must be utilized better,” says Christopher Engman in an article in Resumé.  Advertisers, especially in the consumer business, are completely correct in saying it’s hard to get clicks and difficult to measure how well you can build a brand with banners. But what if you use banners in the right place in the marketing and sales processes?

    On August 30, the latest seminar was held and Vendemore CEO, Christopher Engman had a workshop entitled “What is it that makes you lose business? And how can you avoid it? ”

    • Search on LinkedIn for common connectors that can be used to “name drop” during the meeting. If a contact is an existing customer, it is strongly encouraged to take it up as a reference at the meeting.
    • Commitment, keep track of customer activities and participate as much as possible, seminars, press events and more.
    • Educate the customer …share your knowledge, then you also insert your “mind set” for the best solution to his / her problem.
    • Make a comparison matrix that makes it easier for customers to compare alternatives, not only competitors but also the status quo and other substitutes.

My business intelliegence efforts have in any case become easier.

    Instapaper is available in your appstore on your iPhone or iPad. Not free, but at least for me the 38 sek has already paid for itself.
